Vanessa-Carlton

Vanessa Carlton brings songs from her new album, Liberman, to Ottawa.

Vanessa Carlton
The 2002 single “A Thousand Miles” has long been — and probably always will be — Vanessa Carlton’s most popular song. And it seems she’s okay with that. In the years since, she’s experimented with her sound, releasing songs with progressively darker themes and more mature lyrics. They’re the songs, in short, that she wanted to write. Her new record, Liberman, continues in that vein, blended with a dash of dream pop. She performs at Mavericks on Saturday, Nov. 21. Tickets $27. Mavericks, 221 Rideau St., 613-562-3941, mavericksbar.com.

capitalpopup

Find soaps, gourmet items, and more at Capital Pop Up on Saturday, Nov. 21.

Capital Pop Up! Handmade Show – Celebrate the Makers
It’s the season of giving and getting, and at Capital Pop Up this Saturday, Nov. 21, you can do both. Makerspace North will host the artisan sale from noon to 5pm. There is a $2 admission fee that goes to the Shepherds of Good Hope (the giving). Once inside, peruse the vendors, the bakers, and the candlestick-makers for things to add to your home, your kitchen, or wardrobe (the getting). There will also be an ornament-making workshop for kids and adults. Follow them on Facebook; new vendors are signing on daily. Makerspace North, 250 City Centre, Bay 216, capitalpopup.ca.

Hey Rosetta!
When St. John’s septet Hey Rosetta! write a song, they set down a foundation of warm acoustic melodies. Then they layer it with a panoply of instruments — cellos, violins, and French horns. Their folk rock music has been described as mysterious, resonant, and unmistakable, and in their new album Second Sight, they push their songwriting to the next level. They perform at the National Arts Centre on Sunday, Nov. 22 alongside special guests Yukon Blonde, with whom they wrote the protest song “Land You Love”. Tickets from $29. National Arts Centre, Southam Hall, 53 Elgin St., 866-850-2787, nac-cna.ca.
